Habitat crews and volunteers are working hard to get two new homes under roof before the snow begins flying in Grand County. The process has gone faster than normal thanks to pre-assembled wall panels from WeBuild, and the dedication of construction overseer George Davis of Maple Street Builders. These are the fourth and fifth homes to have risen on the adjacent Hot Sulphur Springs build site since 2017. We’re not just building houses, we’re building a neighborhood!

Habitat Executive Director Lisa Cooper, at left, created an extraordinary Habitat entry for this year’s Festival of Trees fundraising event in Fraser. It included cardboard house ornaments that each contained a gold foil-wrapped Ferrero Roche chocolate. Beautiful, and delicious! Thanks to Cooper, board members Martin Smith (at right), Nina Healy, and Dick Schamberger for helping create a memorable evening at the Treefest.

Our favorite parts of the Habitat experience are the home dedications, when staff, volunteers, clergy, elected officials, and Grand County’s newest homeowners gathered to celebrate the completion of Habitat’s newest home. The Grand Quilters presented Lacey Sparks and her there children with custom-made quilts as a welcome gift, including one for Lacey’s daughter made from her favorite T-shirts, and Pastor Brian Bergum of Lord of the Valley Lutheran Church in Granby delivered a humdinger of a benediction. The event made the front page of the Sky-Hi News, which has reliably spotlighted Habitat’s work for many years.

March went out like a lion on a snow-blown Friday, March 31, but a hardy few — and relatively new — volunteers still showed up to help paint interior doors and trim boards as we prepare to install flooring, windowsills, and kitchen cabinets. Thanks to future homeowner Lacey Lund for the group snapshot of Nicole, Doug, Karen and Dani.

The application process is OPEN NOW! A huge thanks to the construction team for building these signs that are located throughout our community.

An extra special thanks to US Bank, Fraser Valley Distilling, and Rendezvous Center for allowing our signs a temporary home while we look for our next potential homeowner.

The Roofing Company of Granby arrived this week to install the roof on House #14, and just in time! The installation happened just a day before a big snowfall. We’re grateful for their generosity and willingness to partner with Habitat to seal in the house so our crew can work in warmth through the winter.

Colorado Timber Resources in Parshall has donated all of the lumber and other materials so Habitat for Humanity of Grand County can build storage sheds for our new homes in Hot Sulphur Springs. Thanks to co-owner Dave Fiala and his team for their generosity, and to the hardy volunteers who have turned out in the cold weather of recent weeks to begin building those sheds from scratch!

Habitat volunteers in Grand County also find time to help needy homeowners with short-term repair projects. If you think you might qualify for that kind of help, please contact us to discuss the details.

Habitat for Humanity of Grand County board member Lisa Steen and past president Chuck Chladek recently helped a Granby homeowner repair the rotted and unsafe stairs from her deck. Need help with short-term projects such as this? Contact Executive Director Lisa Cooper at lcooper@habitatgrandcounty.org.

Thanks to extraordinary volunteer turnout in July 2022, the framing work on House #14 proceeded at an astounding pace — from foundation to what you see here in just four weeks, including a front deck, gable roof, and a driveway retaining wall. Thanks to Bob “The Builder” Kittler and another professional framer for their guidance, as well as our regular volunteers and community groups such as SKP for making it happen. We hope to continue the momentum on House #15 in the coming weeks, with the goal of getting both houses dried in before the snow flies. Help us get local families into these homes as quickly as possible! Contact Executive Director Lisa Cooper at 970-887-9138 or lcooper@habitatgrandcounty.org today!
